The Canon BJC-55 Review

Canon excels in the manufacture of high end peripheral devices and the Canon BJC-55 is one of its best machines available. The printer is portable and one of the best amongst all the printers in the portable format.

Following are details about the printer as per its specifications.

  • Weight: Few portable printers can match the Canon BJC-55 in its weight. Weighing just above two pounds, including the weight of the battery, it is one of the most lightweight printing devices available in the market.
  • Size: Fitting easily in a briefcase or a computer bag, the printers dimensions are 11.9” X 4.4” X 2” (width X breadth X height).

  • Speed: Keeping in mind its weight and dimensions, the BJC-55 prints five black pages and two color pages per minute. Just the right speed for on the go printing.

  • Battery life: Canon claims that the BJC-55 can print 100 pages on full battery. The battery is lithium ion and though it prints a few pages short of a hundred on a single battery charge, the performance is none the less very impressive. Moreover, the battery recharges fairly quickly so that your travel printing is not hampered at all.

  • Resolution: 720X360 DPI for both black and color prints.

  • Connection interface: The Canon BJC interface is two pronged. A standard USB port and an advanced IrDA (Infrared port). The IrDA is very fast and proves to be a real blessing especially when you are printing on the move.

Aforementioned are the bare specifications, but there is more to this great printing machine. It connects easily with laptops, handhelds, tablet PCs and desktop computers. The printer seldom malfunctions and you will mostly find your printer working when it is most needed. The quality is good for text printing, not very impressive for high color images (like photos) but does just fine for report and map printing etc.

Most Canon printers, especially the BJC-55 works seamlessly with all kinds of all of operating systems. That includes every OS from the age old Windows 98 to Windows XP, VISTA to the MAC OSX and Palm VX family

Probably the only weak link in the printer is the fact that it is a single sheet feed machine. However, Canon offers an accessory sheet feeder called the ASF 50 and you can stack upto thirty sheets of paper, five envelopes and ten transparencies at a time.

It must be noted that the BJC-55 has not decreased in price, but neither in sales in the last four years. A sure proof that it is one the most dependable portable printing machines available.
